A. Bruce Buckley, 85, died Wednesday, October 3, 2012, in Wilmington, with his family at his side. His wife, Virginia Perry Buckley, whom he married on September 29, 1951, survives. Shortly before his death, he and Virginia celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Mr. Buckley was born in Wilmington on October 20, 1926, the son of the late Elsie Fisher Buckley and Karl E. Buckley.
He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1944 and received a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Parks School of Aeronautics in St. Louis. Following graduation, he worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle. He then did graduate work in aeronautical engineering at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh and taught there for one year. Following his marriage, he moved to Yellow Springs and worked as an aeronautical engineer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, doing wind tunnel research that later was used as the basis for modern rocket designs. In 1956, he returned to Wilmington and worked at Buckley Bros. Inc., where he remained for nearly 40 years. In the early 1990’s, he was instrumental in expanding the business to include drive-thru barns. He served as president and chairman of the board until he retired.
Mr. Buckley was on the board of the Wilmington Public Library for 30 years, and also served as president. He was actively involved in the library renovation project, which culminated in 1997. He was secretary-treasurer of the Progressive Investment Club, a member of the Wilmington Lions Club, a member of the Wilmington Jaycees, and a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He also attended meetings of the Clinton County Woodworkers, a group that inspired him to take up woodcarving in his 80’s.
Mr. Buckley was a Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. His experiences in Scouting helped to form his love of the outdoors and travel, which stayed with him all his life and took him to 49 states and other countries. He and his family enjoyed summer camping trips, usually in the mountains, for more than 20 years. Later in life, he and Virginia took extended trips to Brazil, Nova Scotia, Alaska, and China.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Buckley is survived by three children, Doug (Kathy), Mark (Charlotte), and Lisa; five grandchildren, Jennifer Buckley, Corey Buckley, Hannah Buckley, Kirsten Buckley, and Gunnar Buckley; a great-grandchild, Jack Buckley; a brother, Gordon (Hannelore) Buckley; a sister-in-law, Jean Ann Perry; two brothers-in-law, Richard Perry and Robert Perry; and several nieces and nephews.
