BARBARA HAZARD Obituary

Barbara Brandon Hazard, 97 years old of Wilmington, passed away on Thursday July 11, 2013, at the Laurels of Blanchester. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Frank Orlando Hazard, who died June 15, 1963. She was born on November 24, 1915 in Piqua, Ohio, the daughter of Irene and Harry H. Brandon. The family moved to Wilmington in 1930. Barbara graduated from Wilmington High School in the Class of 1933 and attended Wilmington College, where she was a member of the Delta Omega Theta Sorority. She was a graduate of the Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio in 1937. She married Frank Hazard, professor at Wilmington College on August 25, 1937. They made their home in Wilmington where he continued to teach until his death. Barbara was a strong supporter of Wilmington College and the Frank Hazard Arboretum there was created in Frank's memory. Barbara belonged to various organizations including AAUW, Tuesday Bridge Club, St. Nicholas Club, the Women's Investment Club, Wilmington Friends Meeting, and was a member of Snow Hill Country Club for nearly 70 years. She was the last of a very special group of friends who enjoyed bridge clubs, dinner clubs, traveling, and social gatherings. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca (Donald) Rauch and Susan Douglass, both of Wilmington. Her son-in-law, Don, was a great support to her throughout the years and she loved him as if he were her son. Barbara was devoted to her grandchildren, Craig Rauch of Centerville, and Jennifer Douglass (Jeremy) Ramage of Loveland. For the past several years, her life was centered on her beloved great grandchildren, Alison, Patrick, and Gwendolyn Ramage, of Loveland, who filled her heart with joy and happiness. Barbara's family would especially like to thank the Laurels of Blanchester and Hospice of Hope for their kindness and attentive care. Friends may call from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Sunday July 14, 2013 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio. A graveside service will follow at Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington. Donald Rauch, Craig Rauch, Jeremy Ramage, and John Knight will serve as honorary pall bears. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Hazard Arboretum at Wilmington College, 1870 Quaker Way, Wilmington, Ohio 45177.
