Jane Scott Hayes Telfair, 96, of Wilmington, Ohio passed away 4:10 AM, Monday, September 2, 2013 at Hospice of Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Ohio. Her first husband, Melville D. Hayes, preceded her in death in 1953. Her second husband, Roderick Trimble Telfair, preceded her in death in 1984. She was born July 13, 1917 in Ashland, Kentucky, daughter of the late Peter M. Scott and Margaret Bertram Scott. She was a 1939 graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1956 she received her master’s degree in music education from The Ohio State University. In 1972 she received the degree of specialist in curriculum and supervision from Miami University.
She began her career serving as the director of music for the Clinton County school systems. She then became the director of elementary vocal music for Marion City Schools in Marion, Ohio. In 1944 she chaired the music department at Wilmington College. She then taught vocal music for Wilmington City Schools. She retired after 37 ½ years of teaching.
She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church of Wilmington since 1939. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the state of Ohio, the Ohio Historical Decorative Arts Association, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Taft Museum of Art, the Six and Twenty Club, the Cincinnati Women’s Club, the Dayton Antiques Study Club, the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and the Clinton County Retired Teachers Association. She was a lifetime member of the Clinton County Historical Society. She recently received her 75-year membership award from the Alpha Chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority at Miami University in Oxford. She served in the Music Educators National Convention and served on the Music for Early Childhood committee. She served as president of the Decorative Arts Society of Cincinnati. She was a 2004 Outstanding Woman of Clinton County. Also in 2004 she was honored by being asked to deliver the Collector’s Lecture at the Winterthur Collectors Circle Meeting in Delaware.
She is survived by a son, Dr. M. Donald Hayes of Wilmington, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Barnes Scott of New Bern, North Carolina; a nephew, Peter M. Scott III; three nieces, Isabel Chason, Margaret Lynch, and Josephine Dorsett; eight great nieces and great nephews; and three great-great nieces and great-great nephews. In addition to her first husband, second husband, and parents, a brother, Peter M. Scott II, and a nephew, Robertson Scott, are preceded in death.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Friday, September 6, 2013 at the Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, 840 Timber Glen Drive, Wilmington, Ohio. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington, Ohio. Friends may call from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio.
