John M. Smith, 91, of Wilmington, Ohio died 10:00 PM, Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Clinton Memorial Hospital. His wife, Jean K. Smith, preceded him in death April 1, 1992. Mr. Smith was born November 10, 1919 in Springfield, Ohio, son of the late Pearl J. and Katherine Lysaght Smith. He moved to Wilmington after the death of his parents to live with his uncle and aunt, Pat and Rose Leary. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II in the South Pacific. During his military service he was stationed aboard the FS-210 which sailed from the Marianas Islands.
Mr. Smith was a retired independent insurance agent. He was the retired president and chairman of Smith Feike Minton Inc. He had also worked at the First National Bank of Wilmington from 1937 – 1941. He was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church and a charter member of the Father O’ Donoghue Knights of Columbus Council 3369. He was also a member of the B.P.O. Elks 797 and the American Legion Post 49. He was a past president of the Dayton Chapter of the CPCU and a former member of the Clinton County Board of Elections. He was president of the 1937 graduating class of Wilmington High School.
Mr. Smith is survived by three sons, J. Stephen (Barbara) Smith of Liberty Township, Ohio, C. Michael Smith of Toledo, Ohio, and W. Pat (Vera) Smith of Yellow Springs, Ohio; a daughter, Barbara Smith Mappes of St. Louis, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Ruth Kress of Decatur, Illinois; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and his special caregivers, Bonnie Slone and Carol Nichols. In addition to his wife and parents, a brother, James Francis Smith, and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Harris, are preceded in death.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 15, 2011 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, 73 N. Mulberry Street, Wilmington, Ohio with Rev. James M. Wedig officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 49 Memorial Squad. Friends may call from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home and from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 15, 2011 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
