Joyce I. Atkins, 93, of Wilmington, Ohio passed away peacefully in her home Thursday, September 29, 2016. She was born March 8, 1923 in Colville, Washington, daughter of the late Jean F. and Margery M. Palmer Johnson. In 1943, while working in accounting at Boeing B-29 Field in Seattle, Washington, she met Leroy "Roy" Bronson Atkins. They were married February 19, 1944 and after W.W. II, resided in Portsmouth, Ohio. Joyce was a homemaker until their two sons were out of school. She then worked in accounting at Kroger and Top Value, both in Dayton, Ohio. In 1974, after living in Kettering, Joyce and Roy moved to Chester Township, Clinton County, Ohio. They loved living in the country together for many years. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church and the U.M. Women. She loved oil painting, drying flowers, and making arrangements and wreaths. She handcrafted over 800 "Special Angels" for which a copyright was issued in 1984. In 1998 Joyce and Roy moved to Wilmington due to his health problems. After Roy's death in February 2000, Joyce remained in her home and enjoyed many years of working with arts and crafts at the Senior Center. Mrs. Atkins is survived by a son, Bob Atkins of Wilmington, Ohio; two grandchildren, Todd Colson and Stephanie Morris Yount; a half-sister, Janet (Dell) Brubaker; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Bryant; and brothers-in-law, Russ Heald and Joseph Lynd. In addition to her husband and parents, a son, James D. Atkins, a grandson, Matthew Colson, a brother, Earnest Dale Johnson, a sister, Betty Heald, a half-sister, Joyce G. Lynd, a sister-in-law, Kathy Johnson, and a brother-in-law, Thorne Bryant are preceded in death. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Miami Valley Memory Gardens, Centerville, Ohio. The family would like to especially thank Community Care Hospice for the dedication and care provided to Mrs. Atkins.
