Juanita Mae Purcell Moyer, 92, of Wilmington, Ohio passed away 12:25 PM, January 17, 2014 at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. Known as Ootie Mae to her family and loved ones (her younger sister could not pronounce Juanita), she was born July 13, 1921 in Bloomingburg, Ohio, daughter of the late Roy and Lillie Mae Purcell.
After graduating from Bloomingburg High School where she was the star of her high school operettas, she worked briefly at Craig’s Department Store in Washington Court House, Ohio. In 1944 she married the love of her life, Robert W. Moyer, who preceded her in death in 2000. They moved to Wilmington in 1962. There, Mrs. Moyer worked for the Clinton County Welfare Department, and was an avid member of the Clinton County Democratic Party. She particularly enjoyed being First Lady of Wilmington when Robert was mayor. Mrs. Moyer was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and for many years sang in the choir of the Wilmington United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her children, Robert P. Moyer of Winston Salem, North Carolina and Vivienne Adair of Worcester, Vermont; her three grandchildren, Joshua David Moyer of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Molly Adair Ferretti of Tempe, Arizona, and Lisa Haggerty of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan; and two great-grandchildren, Erin and Leah Haggerty. In addition to her husband and parents, a sister, Donna Marilyn Purcell Bloomer, is preceded in death.
Her wit, sense of humor, and friendship will be missed by many.
Friends may call from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, January 22, and from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Wednesday, January 22, at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio.
