Marianna Brown was born in Martinsville, Ohio on November 13, 1915, the daughter of E. Ray Brown (1891-1987) and Emma Betts Brown (1891-1980). Upon her marriage in 1914, Emma Betts had gone to live with her husband E. Ray Brown in the home of his parents MacArthur and Mary Alma Phillips Brown on Rte. 350 near Morrisville. However, Emma returned to the home of her parents Daniel Webster Betts (1854-1919) and Anna Johnson Betts (1859-1927) in Martinsville for a few days to give birth to her first child, Marianna.
Marianna grew up in the white Victorian house with large porches built by her grandparents Brown in 1892. She had a brother Francis Ray, born in 1917 and a sister Reba Jean, born in 1921. She walked to elementary school in Morrisville, and graduated from Martinsville High School in the Class of 1932 at the age of 16. The family attended Morrisville Methodist Church.
Marianna’s Uncle Ellery Brown helped her attend Wilmington College, and she earned her Teachers Certificate in 1934. She joined the Tau Theta Chi sorority. She taught at New Antioch Elementary School for four years.
On June 19, 1937, she married Guy Estel Snyder at a private ceremony with a Justice of the Peace in Covington, Kentucky, with Estel’s aunt and uncle as witnesses. They had been neighbors and had graduated in the same Martinsville High School class. They began housekeeping in the small house on the bend of Brown Road, where their first son William Ray was born in 1938. In 1939 they moved to the new farmhouse that her uncle Ellery Brown had built on one of his farms at 2661 Brown Road, and their second son Estel Eugene was born there on December 13, 1939, on Estel’s 25th birthday.
Marianna and Estel Snyder lived in that farmhouse from 1939 until 1989. They eventually purchased that farm, plus additional farmland which, with inherited lands, made up a farm, which eventually totaled over 400 acres. Estel raised purebred Poland China hogs, as had Marianna’s father and grandfather.
Marianna returned to teaching when her sons were in the fifth grade and fourth grade, teaching at Martinsville Elementary School from 1948 until 1970. She was fifth grade teacher for both of her sons. She continued her studies at Wilmington College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958. She retired from teaching in 1970, and was a life member of the Clinton County and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.
The family was active in the nearby Morrisville Methodist Church, and the boys were members of a 4-H Club. They were members of Grange and Farm Bureau, and Marianna was a member of the Martinsville Eastern Star.
After retirement they enjoyed travelling in their camper and on tours, and spending winters in North Fort Myers Florida. Marianna enjoyed reading and crocheting. They became members of Martinsville Methodist Church after the closing of the Morrisville Methodist Church. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at Snow Hill County Club in the summer of 1987.
In 1989 they purchased a home on Mayfair Avenue in Wilmington where they lived for ten years. They lived in an apartment in Friendly Center in Wilmington from late 1999 until late 2004, when they moved to Quaker Heights Care Community in Waynesville.
Her husband Guy Estel Snyder died in September of 2006. Their son William died in Chicago in January 2006. She was preceded in death by her brother Francis Brown and sister-in-law Mozelle Knight Brown, and her sister Reba Jean Tedrick.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, six grandchildren and their spouses, and twelve great-grandchildren.
She leaves her son E. Eugene Snyder and his wife Christine Hadley Snyder of Adams Township, and their family Timothy and Marci Shore Snyder, son Kalev and daughter Talia of New Haven CT, Philip and Mary Moore Snyder and sons Benjamin and Thomas of San Diego CA, and Michael and Lori Anderson Snyder and daughters Ivy and Cora of Norman OK.
She leaves the family of her late son William Ray Snyder, Sharon and David Mitchell and daughter Emma of Ann Arbor, MI and son Cameron of Philadelphia, Steven and Kris Snyder of Boulder, CO and Shawn and Tambrey Snyder and their children Jackson, Erik, Taylor Marianna and Devyn Linda Snyder of Golden CO.
She leaves one brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
