Robert L. Babb, 85, of Wilmington, Ohio died 6:05 AM, Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Wilmington Nursing & Rehabilitation Residence. His wife, Betty Lee Rose Babb, preceded him in death August 8, 1997. They were married August 22, 1949. Mr. Babb was born February 26, 1926 in Clinton County, Ohio, son of the late Raymond W. and Margaret Conover Babb. Following the death of his mother in 1929, he was raised by an uncle and aunt, Bob and Lena Maher. He was a 1944 graduate of Wilmington High School.
Following high school, Mr. Babb worked for International Harvester in Springfield, Ohio. He then joined the U.S. Army and served to tours of duty during World War II. After the war, he worked at Cincinnati Milling Machine, which became Cincinnati Milacron, for several years before becoming the co-owner of Babb Sheet Metal Company with his brother, Donald. He retired from Babb Sheet Metal Co. in 1988.
In 1953 he joined the Wilmington Fire Dept. where he served as a part-time firefighter until 1990, when he retired as a captain. For almost a decade following his retirement, he served as a volunteer with the Wilmington and Clarksville Fire Departments. He was the third generation of Babb firefighters. After his retirement from the fire department, he built his own mini fire engine, driving it in many area parades.
He was a 4-H advisor for many years, a long time member of the B.P.O. Elks 797, and a member of the Elks bowling team. He was a member of the New Vienna Senior Citizens, the Clinton County Antique Power Club, and the New Antioch Church of Christ. He received the Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award in March 2007.
Mr. Babb is survived by two sons, Thomas (Brenda) Babb of Wilmington, Ohio and Rev. Mark (Rev. Susan) Babb of Jackson, Michigan; a grandson, Marshall (Michelle) Babb of Wilmington, Ohio; a great grandson, Colt Babb; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Babb, who died in 1954, and a brother, Donald Babb.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Monday, June 27, 2011 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio with Tim Ramsey and Rev. Susan Babb officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 49 Memorial Squad. Friends may call from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Sunday, June 26, 2011 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home.
