Walter Jay Wiswell Jr., 73, of Wilmington, Ohio passed away 2:05 AM, Friday, June 29, 2018 at his residence. His wife, Carolyn Mae Wiswell, preceded him in death February 20, 2005. They were married October 30, 1965. Mr. Wiswell was born July 28, 1944 in Wilmington, Ohio, son of the late Walter J. Wiswell Sr. and Eileene L. Crouse Wiswell. He was a graduate of Wilmington High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1969 with the First Missile Battalion. He then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1969 to 1972 with the 160th Combat Support Crash Fire Rescue.
Mr. Wiswell retired in 1993 after a 30-year career as a firefighter/EMT for the City of Wilmington. He was assistant chief of the Wilmington Fire Dept when he retired. He was also a fire instructor and taught throughout Ohio from 1970 – 1992. Additionally, he taught Crash Fire Rescue and was a certified SCUBA diver. Following retirement, Jay worked for Maher’s Window & Remodeling for 12 years and Wilmington Transit System for 14 years. He was a founding member and past president of the Clinton County Fire Chiefs Association. He was a member of the American Legion Post 49 and the American Legion Riders. Jay was an avid hunter, fisherman, and NASCAR fan.
He is survived by his four children, Jaye Lynn (Jerald) Stapleton of Hephzibah, Georgia, Mark (Jennifer) Wiswell of Wilmington, Ohio, Jodi (Jeff) Leasher of Blanchester, Ohio, and Michael (Dianna) Wiswell of Wilmington, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Cari Ross, Victoria Miltenberger, McKenzie (fiancée, Aleea Lawson) Wiswell, Kaylee Wiswell, Allisun (fiancé, Ricky Leggett) Leasher, Autumn Leasher, Lane Wiswell, and Emily Wiswell; six great grandchildren, Joshua Edwards, Chase Edwards, Gracelynn Mynatt, Ryker Wiswell, Gavin Carr, and Gaige Carr; special friend, Kathy Cook; and his beloved bulldog, Sarge.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 6, 2018 at Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio with Robert Baker officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home.
