Wilbur T. Lay, 76, of Wilmington, Ohio passed away quietly Saturday, March 10, 2012 at his home after a long battle with illness. His wife of 56 years, Jean Lay, survives. Mr. Lay was born July 19, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, son of the late Wilbur S. and Adelaide Raso Lay. He was a graduate of Purcell High School in Cincinnati.
Mr. Lay was on of the first employees hired at the new Medisorb Technologies (now Alkermes Pharmaceutical). He served as maintenance supervisor at DPL (Killen Station, Manchester, Ohio), was the housing inspector at Clinton Metropolitan Authority, and was one of only 13 welders in the United States qualified to weld on nuclear power plants. Later, for a short time, he was a welding instructor for an adult education program at Laurel Oaks Vocational Center. Will was a longtime member of the Wilmington Presbyterian Church where he had served as both a deacon and trustee. He was also a member of the Wilmington F&AM Lodge #52 and had volunteered at Clinton Memorial Hospital for seven years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Teri (Tony) Stern, Shari Van Pelt, and Darren Lay; five grandchildren, Travis (Danni) Stern, Megan Stern, Zach Stern, Nick Van Pelt, and Ben Van Pelt; two great grandchildren, Lilly Stern and Lexi Stern; and a special family friend, Shannon Moler.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Wilmington Presbyterian Church, 840 Timber Glen Drive, Wilmington, Ohio with Rev. Jeff Ott officiating. Burial will be in Clinton County Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Wilmington Presbyterian Church.
