LILLIAN PLISKIN Obituary

Lillian Goldman Pliskin, whose nursing career spanned most of the 20th century, died on April 16, 2011. She was 94. Lillian was born in Revere, Massachusetts, on November 1, 1916. Raised on a farm in Middleboro, Mass., she left for Newark City Hospital School of Nursing in 1935 where one of her first official duties was as witness of Last Rites to New York City gangster Dutch Schultz after he was shot at the Palace Chophouse bar in Newark. In May of 1937 she was one of several nursing students rushed to the crash site of the German dirigible, Hindenburg, in Lakehurst, New Jersey, to help identify victims and tend to survivors. After her 1942 marriage to Sidney Pliskin (deceased 1973) and a move to Roxbury, Mass., Lillian worked in the Boston City Hospital, the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Brookline Hospital. The mother of three children, Robert (Windham, New Hampshire), Marcy (Wilmington, Ohio) and Deborah (Kennesaw, Georgia), she spent most of her life in the adjoining towns of Sharon and Stoughton, Massachusetts, working in Dr. Kauffman's family practice office and eventually having a 15-year career as a school nurse for the Sharon School System. After retirement in 1981, she continued working part time as the RN in a Boston area weight loss clinic, ending her long career at the age of 84. In 2006, a citation for her 60-year career was awarded to her by the Governor of Massachusetts. She moved to Wilmington, Ohio, in 2007 to be closer to her daughter, Marcy, lived for a year at Cape May Retirement Village, and for the past three years at Cedar Village Health Care Facility in Mason, Ohio. She was surrounded by friends and family. Lillian's other interests included her strong support for publicity for the Sharon Civic Orchestra, her ongoing lessons in oil painting, traveling, and shopping. Other than her children, she is survived by seven grandchildren: Margaret Hawley (Jason) Morgan, Sarah Hawley, and Jonathan (Tanika) Hawley; Sydney and Stacy Novik; Stephanie and Steven Pliskin, and three great grandchildren: Acala Cresci, Cami Morgan, and Bailey Moser. A memorial service and interment will be held at Sharon Memorial Park in Sharon, Massachusetts in August.
