Fred A. Murphy, 99, of Wilmington, Ohio died 9:10 PM, Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Autumn Years Nursing Center. Fred was born November 9, 1911 in New Antioch, a son of the late Ray Murphy and Bessie Reynolds Murphy. His wife, Maxine Harlan Murphy, preceded him in death July 11, 1995. They were married October 17, 1937.
Mr. Murphy was a former chairman for the Clinton County Red Cross; trustee for Clinton Memorial Hospital, serving as chairman in 1952 and a member of the first hospital board and a member and former trustee of the Wilmington Friends Meeting. He was a past-exalted ruler of Elks Lodge 797 and a member for over 50
years; member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years; member and trustee of the Snow Hill Country Club; member of the Community Chest Board of Clinton County; and a former director of the Wilmington Savings and Loan Co. He was a member of Wilmington Rotary Club since 1947; a trustee of the original Wilmington Senior Citizens organization and a member of the Foundation program at Wilmington High School. He was a 1929 graduate of Wilmington High School and graduated from The Ohio State University in 1933. He taught school at Wilmington High School from 1934 to 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 until he was discharged as a captain in 1946. He was a former director of the President’s Club at The Ohio State University and was a charter member of the President’s Council at The Ohio State University in 1963.
Mr. Murphy and his wife Maxine were strong supporters of Wilmington College. He was an avid gardener and Ohio State Buckeye fan.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his nieces and nephews, Shan Pratt, Sherry (Bill) Arehart, Tom South, Mike (Fran) Murphy, Dave Murphy and Tom (Kathy) Lapp; and his great nieces and great-nephews, Todd (Marsha) Fentress, Nikki (Steve) Floyd, Chad (Kari) Fentress, Shanin (Rusty) Richardson, Billy (Beth) Arehart, Kristin (Michael) Carey, Jeff (Donna) Murphy, Brad (Jill) Murphy, Megan (Roger) Niles, Letisha Dalton, Tammy (Rob) Saylers, Rachel (Chris) Mackey and Renee (Austin) Keller. In addition to his parents and wife, a brother, Glen Murphy, and two sisters, Maxine Lapp and Donna South, are preceded in death.
A memorial services will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio with family member, Rev. Jim Long, officiating.
