Michael W. Stephens, 65, of New Vienna passed away 11:40 AM, Saturday, September 1, 2012 at his home after a lengthy illness. His wife of 44 years, Juliette Fredella Stephens, survives. Mr. Stephens was born August 4, 1947 in Springfield, Ohio, son of the late Edwin H. Stephens and Betty J Spurgeon Kell. He was a graduate of Wilmington High School.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, obtaining his sub schooling in Groton, Connecticut. He served on the Nathaniel Greene out of Charleston, South Carolina, then returned to New London, Connecticut and served on the rescue ship, Skylark. Upon returning to Wilmington, he made his living as a third generation carpet layer, working alongside his father. Later he was a construction worker and a part-time police officer for the Village of New Vienna.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Stephens is survived by two sons, David (Linda) Stephens of Petal, Mississippi and Shawn Stephens of Martinsville, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Caitlin Stephens and Justin Stephens. In addition to his parents, an infant son, Edwin Frank Stephens, preceded him in death in 1987.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington, Ohio with Sidney Clay officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 49 Memorial Squad.
