Richard R. Groves, 81, of Wilmington, Ohio passed away 7:55 AM, Friday, March 16, 2012. His wife, Vera Ann Lucas Groves, whom he married June 11, 1949, survives. They were married for 62 years and were blessed with five children. Mr. Groves was born May 21, 1930 in Wilmington, Ohio, son of the late Sylvester L. Groves and Emma Jane Smith Malone. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and served during the Korean War.
Mr. Groves retired from the National Biscuit Company after 30 years of service. He was a well-known Wilmington native. He spent many years coaching youth baseball. He served as president of the Wilmington Athletic Boosters, as well as having spent many hours involved with the Elks Club and Wilmington Lion’s Club. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow, awarded by the Lion’s International Foundation. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 49.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Groves is survived by a daughter, Linda (Tom) Kittle of Blanchester, Ohio; four sons, James (Becky) Groves of Hagerstown, Maryland, Richard Groves Jr. of Wilmington, Ohio, Robert (Mary) Groves of Wilmington, Ohio, and John Groves of Port St Lucie, Florida; two brothers, Ronald Groves and James Groves; ten grandchildren, Kimberly (Chad) Shaffer of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, Jennifer (Michael) Sarber of Smithsburg, Maryland, Erin (Ryan) Dipzinski of Maineville, Ohio, Stephanie (Casey) Woodruff of Morrow, Ohio, Andrew (Laura) Hamm of Morrow, Ohio, Christina (Fiancé, Jason Morrow) Groves of Wilmington, Ohio, Jamie (Jimmy) Roe of Maineville, Ohio, Steven (Jordan) Groves of Wilmington, Ohio, Alicia (Ryan) Anderson of Columbus, Ohio, and Ethan (Ashley) Groves of Lebanon, Ohio; two step-grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a special cousin, Delores Eakins, who was raised with him; a special friend, Pauletta Lucas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Harold Malone, and two sisters, Doris Shope and Dorothy Dooley.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 49 Memorial Squad. Friends may call from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to an organization of the donor’s choice.
