Dorothy M. Sheeter-Haines, 92, formerly of Lynchburg, Ohio died peacefully 11:05 AM, Friday, March 14 2014 at her residence at Otterbein Senior Living-Cridersville, Ohio. Her first husband, Dwight Swisher Sheeter, whom she married November 9, 1944, preceded her in death in 1989. She married her second husband and high school classmate, Jordan W. Haines, October 14, 2000. He preceded her in death in 2006. She was born Dorothy Leah Macfarland November 4, 1921 in Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter of the late Maxwell “Mac” Macfarland and Lucy Ohmer Macfarland.
During World War II, she worked as a clerk at Wright Patterson AFB. After her children were in school in the late 1950’s, she returned to work in the Sheeter family business, a small chain of five and dime stores; she and Dwight operated two stores, one in New Vienna and one in Lynchburg. Clarence Sheeter, Dwight’s brother, operated a store in Wilmington. The New Vienna store closed after a fire and Dorothy assumed the responsibility of the Lynchburg store, known as Sheeter’s “Our Store” when Dwight began working at Wright Patterson AFB in the 1960’s. The last of their two stores closed and she retired in 1982 to the Dayton area.
Dorothy was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Wilmington and later St. Martin’s Catholic Church in St. Martin, Ohio. She was a long-time member of the Wilmington Ladies Bridge Club while her children were young. She loved to read all her life and was also a fan of the Cincinnati Reds, much like her mother.
She is survived by a son, Michael D (Penny) Sheeter of Jackson, Ohio; two daughters, Patricia A. (Tena J. Gillespie) Sheeter of Centerville, Ohio and Nancy S. (Gary) Sheely of Lima, Ohio;
four grandchildren, Jenna Sheeter (Steve) Bowman, Michael (Jenny) Sheeter Jr. of Jackson, Ohio, Michele S. (Erik) Branham of Lima, Ohio, and Matthew L. (Jennifer) Sheely of Morrow, Ohio; six great-grandchildren: Blake Sheeter, Ava Sheeter, Ty Sheeter, Max Bowman, Lilly Branham, and Savannah Sheely; her sister-in-law, Betty Sheeter of Wilmington, Ohio; and a nephew, David (Patty) Sheeter of Sabina, Ohio. In addition to her first husband, second husband and parents, a brother-in-law, Clarence Sheeter Jr. and a nephew, Christopher Sheeter, are preceded in death.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington, Ohio. Friends may call from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home.
